Caffè Spettacolo has been supporting the ANEI coffee cooperative, representing several indigenous groups from the north of Colombia, since 2014. Their beans – organically grown and fair trade – are used in the roast expressions of Caffè Spettacolo. Thanks to this collaboration and regular special offers, the cooperative has a guaranteed income and can finance an urgently needed organic fertiliser plant. This will help them improve their poor soil and increase the money they can earn from growing coffee beans and vegetables.

For many people, the day starts with coffee. Maybe even at Caffè Spettacolo. But how many people know where their favourite wake-up brew comes from and how it was grown? Caffè Spettacolo’s hot coffee beverages contain a very special bean from northern Colombia, or more specifically, from the Sierra Nevada and Serranía del Perijá regions. Since 1995, several indigenous groups have been growing top-quality coffee beans under the ANEI label in this area. As is totally natural for these indigenous farmers to act in close communion with nature without exploiting its resources, they apply organic farming methods, but organic farms also have a much smaller harvest than conventional plantations.

Plans for an organic fertiliser plant

To help improve the situation for ANEI, Caffè Spettacolo has been using their Arabica beans in its roast expressions since 2014. Furthermore, the aim of regular fund-raising campaigns is to help them to analyse and determine the quality of their soil and build an organic fertiliser plant. This will enable the cooperative to sustainably improve their soil and earn extra income from the sale of fertiliser. Not only will this improve their earnings from coffee harvests, but it will also make it easier to grow basic foodstuffs such as beans, maize and bananas. Selling fair trade-certified beans also strengthens the community in other ways: It provides the funds needed for investments in the infrastructure and education, such as installing solar panels on the roofs of rural schools, and improves the social position of women, who are gaining independence while learning to grow coffee.

Perfect for Caffè Spettacolo

In June 2018, the newly refurbished Caffè Spettacolo in Solothurn hosted several representatives of ANEI, who gave a presentation on their cooperative and beans. The visit started with a small cupping, the professional tasting of coffee to observe and grade its quality. ANEI’s Arabica beans are considered to be excellent. With its smooth and full-bodied aroma and light citrus note, Arabica is the perfect addition to Caffè Spettacolo’s authentic Italian coffee blend.

The next fund-raising campaigns for the ANEI project will take place in September and October 2018: For each full coffee loyalty card with 12 cups, five francs will go directly to the ANEI cooperative. There will also be a competition for a trip to Colombia including a visit to the coffee farmers.
